Although Edward Frederick (E.F.) Benson wrote over 70 novels as well as a number of biographies, ghost stories, and other works of fiction and non-fiction, he is best remembered today for his six novels chronicling the social squabbles and adventures of two middle-aged ladies, Elizabeth Mapp and Emmeline Lucas (known as "Lucia" to her friends).

Dear Ms Ramage,
My wife and I have a special interest in the ITV (Thames TV) series "Mapp & Lucia", in that the best man at our wedding (an old school friend of mine)was a member of the sound crew.
Many years ago (approx. 30), I used to stay with friends in the village of Northiam, not too far from Rye, and we often visited the small town, where one of the friends owned an antiques shop (now gone).
As you say, it is such a pleasant little place and we found your descriptive comments very useful in that we intend to visit later this year, having seen repeats of the series on ITV3 (a digital channel), with the intention of looking out for the buildings featured.
