Conversations #1
by James Kochalka and Craig Thompson
Top Shelf Productions

Conversations #1 shows James Kochalka and Craig Thompson discussing the nature of art. At first I thought this might be a sort of comic equivalent of My Dinner With Andre, but though the artwork is plenty amusing, and has a more fantastic style than American Elf, the conversation itself never really fulfills its potential. Their talk is full of statements like, "making art is like getting in a wrestling match with God!" and "mastery is subtlety, or subtlety is mastery." Either of these declarations could be a good starting point for an interesting conversation, but only if developed further. Unfortunately, the book simply lines up a series of vague statements, then ends without any resolution. Since this is "#1", perhaps the ideas can be expanded in the next volume.
