Recently as I started to write this review, an acquaintance saw the book cover, and asked where are the pictures? I imagine that is how a lot of people would feel - seeing the book title. However, the content of the book is different than what can be expected. Porn Nation is a reflective account of how the author spent a greater part of his life obsessed with porn. This unspeakable hobby caused his fifteen year marriage to fall apart, and so this is a self-help book for people to realize that there is an unspoken problem as the author labels the issue of porn-watching a sex syndrome.
The porn industry is worth $100 billion per year internationally and porn has become a societal norm. Porn has initially gained a large foothold in society, with the advent of the VHS and then exploded with the Internet. So it wasn't too hard for Leahy to be introduced to porn via his dad's collection decades ago. Still, he became obsessed, and when he realized that viewing pornography was such an issue, he felt that admitting and reforming was the best course of action.
I did not expect this to be a Christian title, but I have to say that the author has found religion to be his solution to stop watching porn. There are scriptures mentioned and how Leahy found God. One interesting note was how the author has mentioned the he has met and befriended Ron Jeremy, a famous porn star. They go to various college campuses and participate in debates on porn. I couldn't help but remember that my college may have been one of those campuses, where there was such a debate. I definitely do remember Ron Jeremy being one of the speakers, but I'm having a hard time confirming if Michael Leahy was the other speaker. It's a moot point though, so if you want more information on this book: read it and if you have time check out the book's own website.
