Story and Art by Eriko Tadeno
Published by ALC Publishing
ISBN-10: 0975916041
ISBN-13: 978-0975916049

Review by Linda Yau

This is a hot off the press copy that I had received from Yuri Con/ALC Publishing table at Otakon 2008’s dealer room. Just for a little background, ALC Publishing was founded, with the intent of publishing English translations of Yuri love, and they did with Eriko Tadeno Works. The book itself is a collection of four sexy short stories with three couples. The third couple’s story actually covers two stories. [more]

We've all heard about the casting couch in Hollywood, right? In Today's Ulterior Motives Sanari Jounouchi-sensei's casting couch is in the form of an onsen. The first chapter of the manga is told from Jounouchi-sensei's point of view, but Makoto Aizawa tells the rest of it.

Sanari Jounouchi loves to relax in privacy at inns with onsen, or outdoor baths. One evening while getting ready to enjoy his evening he sees a young man in his reserved bath. The young man is openly crying. He then goes under the water and fails to surface again. Jounouchi comes to the young man's rescue only to be told he was play-acting. It turns out that this young man was an actor, at one time. Jounouchi was immediately drawn to him and his charms. After a night of passion Jounouchi figures he will never see the young man again. Sanari Jounouchi is a playwright and director for the Saihou Theatre Company. At auditions, boy was he in for a surprise. In walks his adorable young man, Makoto Aizawa.

Ai no Kusabi, Volume 3--Nightmare
Story by Rieko Yoshihara

Published by Juné, imprint of Digital Manga, Inc.
ISBN-10:  1569707847
ISBN-13:  9781569707845

Review by Jilly Gee

There is a heirarchy the world of the future presented in Ai no Kusabi, with Tanagura Blondies at the top and Ceres residents at the bottom.  Somewhere in between are the "pets", playthings of the Blondies; living beings specially bred to be sex toys for public erotic display; these pets and their owners normally adhere to certain rules of society, some official, some not.  Already breaking rules, the fact that an elite Blondy such as Iason has taken a Ceres slum mongrel such as Riki to be his pet pales in comparison to this slum mongrel being given special treatment by the Blondy.  To Riki, however, it is not special treatment, but torture. From Dead to Worse: A Sookie Stackhouse novel
By Charlaine Harris
Published by Ace Books, New York ISBN-10: 0441015891 ISBN-13: 9780441015894

Review by Ida Vega-Landow

This is the eighth in the Southern Vampire series by the talented Charlaine Harris, a Southern belle with a sense of humor that's both whimsical and macabre. Her vampires are just as frightening as Anne Rice's, and a lot more interesting. So is her heroine, Sookie Stackhouse. Not that there's anything frightening about Sookie; she's just an ordinary working gal from Bon Temps, Louisiana, who works as a barmaid at a local bar named Merlotte's. Oh, and she's also psychic. Story and Art: Takashi Kanzaki
Published by the Deux Press Imprint of Aurora Publishing, Inc.
ISBN-10: 1934496391
ISBN-13: 978-1934496398

Review by Kris

We are treated to three stories in Heavenly Body. Heavenly Body is the main story that takes up about half the book. Then we have two shorter one-shots: A Ballad for You, and Beloved.

Heavenly Body – Hazumi lives at home with two foreign exchange students: Luke and Ray. Luke has an interesting way of waking Hazumi. Luke takes care of Hazumi’s morning wood. It seems Luke is a sex fiend. Ray on the other hand is very sweet and considerate. He hasn’t tried anything funny and seems to really care for Hazumi. Little did Hazumi know that Luke is an angel and Ray is a demon. There is a war going on in Heaven. They’re fighting over the earth. [more]

One Night Lesson
Story and Art: Ryo Takagi
Published by the Juné Imprint of Digital Manga, Inc.
ISBN-10: 1-56970-566-6
ISBN-13: 978-1-56970-566-7

Review by Kris

One Night Lesson is a collection of one-shots. Actually, it contains only three one-shots and a brief mixed manga starring all of our boys at the very end.

One Shot may sound like it's aptly named (it being a one-shot) but actually it's about photography (tee-hee, fooled you!) Kairi is a talented photographer. His model of choice is Takara. Kairi is trying to get shots of the real Takara, but is really having a difficult time. As it turns out, Takara has fallen in love with Kairi but is worried about his photographer (yes, I mean Kairi) uncovering those emotions. Because Kairi is trying to coax out the real Takara, the two spend virtually all of their time together. They work together; they live together, etc. But what will Kairi do to get the shot he's looking for? [more]

Ruff Love
Story and Art: Tamaki Kirishima
Published by the Deux Press Imprint of Aurora Publishing, Inc.
ISBN-10: 1934496413
ISBN-13: 978-1934496411

Review by Kris

Taketora Kanbayashi is an author of historical fiction. Sadly, he's not very good. So, to make ends meet he works part-time in his uncle's bar. Taketora is known for being extremely handsome, but kind of boring. Little did Taketora know that his world was about to be flipped upside down by his grandfather's reincarnated pet dog, Shiba. When Shiba passed away, he wished to be able to return to Takeyuki, Taketora's grandfather, and repay his kindness. Taketora's grandfather had passed away twenty years before. Shiba was a little too late. Taketora then made the decision to allow this cute, but clumsy half-human, half-dog stay with him and take care of him. Yes, Shiba is mostly human but still has dog ears, a tail, and large canine teeth.

Shiba's intentions are pure, but he's very clumsy. Taketora usually ends up cleaning up after Shiba and his clumsiness. Shiba may not be too much help around the house, but he seems to have worked miracles in influencing Taketora's writing. The longer that Shiba stays, Taketora finds himself emotionally opening up. It seems he's fallen in love with Shiba. It turns out that Shiba has fallen in love with Taketora too. Their happiness is cut short by the entrance of a large black dog. [more]
