Shy Intentions
Story and Art: Syouko Takaku

ISBN-13: 978-1-56970-567-4

Review by Kris

Yoshiyuki Shirotsubaki is a handsome middle school art teacher. Kaoru Niiya is a furniture designer. These two met in a place people don't usually cruise looking for a date, the hospital. Yoshiyuki's mother is suffering from liver cancer, whereas Kaoru makes daily visits to his grandmother. Yoshiyuki comes across as being cold and aloof. He hardly ever takes his eyes off the ground and seems to be very closed off to others around him. Kaoru on the other hand is very personable and people just seem to gravitate towards him. Even though the hospital seems to be kind of a strange place to pick up men, it seems to have worked for Kaoru. [more]

Tough Love Baby
Story and Art: Shiuko Kano
Published by Deux Press
ISBN-10: 1934496111
ISBN-13: 978-1934496114

Review by I-hsiu Lin

You can also check out Kris' awesome review of Tough Love Baby, which goes into Kano's unique art style.

“Tough guys need love too.” Shiuko Kano’s Tough Love Baby is all about guys who have tough exteriors but behind their façade, they’re actually quite passionate. Well, not all the guys are tough on the outside. The story opens with Yoshino Kakei who is a pretty relaxed kind of guy. Along with his cat, Sachi, he just moved back to his old city and discovered that his apartment is right next to his ex-girlfriend’s…and her younger brother, Sachi. [more]

Hitohira vol. 1
Story and Art: Idumi Kirihara
Published by Aurora Publishing
ISBN-10: 1934496421
ISBN-13: 978-1934496428

Review by Kris

Ah, the theatre. It is infectious once you get it in your veins. I was a shy kid growing up. I loved to perform for various imaginary friends. I never liked performing in front of real people though. It wasn't until I was twelve-years-old and saw Pirates of Penzance performed at my sister's high school. The lights, the costumes, and the music enchanted me. I knew that I wanted to perform. I soon found myself going to local theatre performances. In the ninth grade I enrolled in my schools theatre class and found myself freed from the things that held me back. I was portraying someone else. I was no longer that shy, self-conscious girl. I was whomever I wanted to be.

You're probably wondering why I took this walk down memory lane. Hitohira is the tale of Mugi Asai. She is a small and very timid freshman. She decided that she wanted to attend the same high school as her friend. Her friend applied to an arts high school, and so did Mugi. Mugi is so timid that she barely speaks above a whisper when speaking to others. When she found out that she passed the exam, she couldn't help but shout her excitement. Surprising not only herself, she caught the attention of the Theatre Research Club director, Nono Ichinose. [more]

ISBN-10: 1934496456

Review by Kris

In my previous review of Kiss All the Boys vol. 2 I said that we would probably be in for an explosive climax. And boy was I right! Plus, be sure to catch my review of Kiss All the Boys vol. 1 for a more detailed look at this amazing series.

For a quick recap:

Tetsuo Atarashi is a 32-year-old, straight, porn comic writer with a 15-year-old gay son. Haruka Enomoto is living with Tetsuo because his mom is in Europe. Haruka is in love with his best friend Hiroto Tamaki. Tetsuo's best friend, editor, and Haruka's uncle, Michiro Enomoto, is in love with Tetsuo. Keiichi Momoyama is one of Tetuso's neighbors and also has a thing for Tetsuo. He was also Tetsuo's first sexual encounter with a man. Tetsuo is a jerk supreme, but things seem to be spiraling out of control for him. Not only has Michiro quit as his editor, but there is also a new addition to the Atarashi household. Tamaki has run away from home and is now staying with Tetsuo and Haruka. [more]

Review by Kris

Yuto Hikami has his hands full. He comes from a family of sorcerers, but believes that the magic ran out a long time ago. The reason he has his hands full you ask? Well... at home he lives with an amnesiac god he named Jade and an agoraphobic water god named Rin. It turns out that Yuto is actually very powerful, but he's not aware of it yet.

In Oh my god! vol. 2 our trio of magical misfits seems to attract trouble wherever they go. First they deal with possessed glowing red beads. Plus there seem to be forces outside the human realm that seem to know who Jade might be and know of Yuto's power as well. Not only are there weird things going on around them but there is another mysterious stranger that looks familiar to Yuto, but he has no idea who this man might be. [more]

One Night Lesson
Story and Art by Ryo Takagi
Published by the Juné Imprint of Digital Manga, Inc.
ISBN-10: 1-56970-566-6
ISBN-13: 978-1-56970-566-7

Review by I-hsiu Lin

Excerpt from the back of the book. "In One Night Lesson, author Ryo Takagi crafts a sweet collection of stories with one thing in common: a sometimes humorous view of the uncertainty, misunderstanding and pain that can accompany budding relationships." That sentenced summed up the theme of the stories very well but 'misunderstandings' is oversimplifying the interactions that the characters go through. [more]

The Keeper
Written by Kalita Kasar
Published by Torquere Press
ISBN-10:  1603704361
ISBN-13:  9781603704366

Review by Jilly Gee

Historical fiction mixed with gay erotica, The Keeper starts with Thomas, a shoemaker's apprentice in 1772, being kidnapped and almost taken to do hard labor.  Lucky for him, he's a pretty boy and gets taken to Léon Chambellan's place instead, to serve as a sort of sex slave.  Actually, "slave" is too strong of a word, since the boys that get taken to Chambellan's supposedly volunteer their services and enjoy it.  Thomas, however, is different from all the other boys, so innocent and pure that he feels the pleasure he gets from Chambellan's touches are wicked and sinful, which simultenously makes him the most desired one out of the household and the one that Chambellan cannot touch.  So Chambellan leaves him alone, hoping that the boy will eventually get over it all and come to seek him out.  Thomas does get over those feelings of shame eventually, but seeing as how he is not aggressive in any way whatsoever, thinks that he has fallen out of Chambellan's favor and works hard to win his way back into it, putting great effort into his "training". The Firemaster's Mistress
Written by Christie Dickason
Published by HarperCollins
ISBN-10:  0061568260
ISBN-13:  9780061568268

Review by Jilly Gee

In the early 1600's, uhappy with the way the new government was treating them, a group of overzealous Catholics and people unhappy with the spinelessness of King James I, formed an elaborate plan to blow up the House of Parliament, now known as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.  Francis Quoynt, son of Boomer Quoynt, known in the area for making explosives, gunpowder, and the like, would have been perfectly satisfied using his talents to make dramatic light shows that would bring awe to people's faces rather than dangerous weapons that would bring pain to the same faces.  His desire for a future secure enough to enable him to confidently take Kate Peach as his wife, however, pushes him to accept a position as a spy from Robert Cecil, first Earl of Salisbury, who promises him that secure future.
