Porn Nation: Conquering America's #1 Addiction
Written by Michael Leahy

Review by Linda Yau

Recently as I started to write this review, an acquaintance saw the book cover, and asked where are the pictures? I imagine that is how a lot of people would feel - seeing the book title. However, the content of the book is different than what can be expected. Porn Nation is a reflective account of how the author spent a greater part of his life obsessed with porn. This unspeakable hobby caused his fifteen year marriage to fall apart, and so this is a self-help book for people to realize that there is an unspoken problem as the author labels the issue of porn-watching a sex syndrome. "It's unbearable this time of the year."

Abe finds the weather to be stifling. End of spring, beginning of summer. Words don't come as easily which presents a problem being that he is a writer with deadlines. But the heat is a reminder of him.

Him. Abe had a relationship with Nakahara two years ago. More like they slept together and that was it. No phone call. No romance. There was no love in the actions. Two years later, Nakahara shows up at Abe's doorstep. There was no sense of seduction. Just one kiss and Abe gave into the younger man's motions. "Let me stay here for awhile." Just the mere presence of him allows Abe to write easier. The words flow from his pen like a long time ago. His secluded lifestyle, his closed up heart...maybe they will change as well. Become lighter and flow like a waltz. [more]

College. For some strange reason new college freshmen seem to think that all that college entails is hot babes, frat parties, and drinking to the point of memory loss. In the case of Takayuki Saito that is his thinking. Not only does he want to party but he also wants to fall in love. At the school entrance ceremony he sees the perfect chance. The reason Saito chose his particular department and major because most of the students are totally cute girls. Saito arrives at the entrance with one heck of a hangover because of the massive party held at the dorms the previous night. His bad luck seems to continue. He was hoping to sit next to one of the hot babes, but ends up next one of the few guys in the department, Hitoshi Sato. Because of the large amount of alcohol Saito had consumed the night before, he ends up passing out in Sato's arms. [more]

I've decided that I really dig BL Yakuza stories. Maybe it's because my mother has been obsessed with the Mafia and I grew up with The Godfather and other mob movies. I seem to be drawn to the Yakuza in the same way.

Homura Yasobe and Touji Karasuma are back in the final installment of A Gentleman's Kiss. The second volume kicks off with Kyoya Kuramoto, former host at Homura's club, basically stalking Homura. It seems that he has fallen for his former boss. Since the stalking doesn't seem to be making any progress, he goes about using the blackmail approach. Kyoya knows about Homura and Touji's affair. To shut him up Homura agrees to go out with him. But his mind is always focused on Touji. [more]

YAM: Bite-Size Chunks
Story and Art: Corey Barba
Published by Top Shelf Productions

ISBN-13: 978-1-60309-014-8

Review by Kris

On the island of La Leche de la Luna lives a young boy with a magical backpack. His name is YAM. I guess he gets his name from the fact that his outfit makes him look like a yam, a cute yam I should say. With his friends Marzipan Gato and May and his pet TV they have many fun adventures. From catching bugs to keep in jars, drinking magical potions, and dreaming of a beautiful young lady from a local carnival, YAM and his friends have lots of fun.

These comics are wonderfully wordless, endlessly creative, and utterly adorable.

Vampire's Portrait
Story and Art: Hiroki Kusumoto

ISBN-13: 978-1-56970-590-2

Review by Kris

Lou is a young painter. On one cold day a handsome stranger approaches him. This mysterious stranger offers to be his patron. He asks Lou to paint his portrait. Sein is a composer. This intrigues Lou because his grandfather, who raised him, played the piano. There seems to be something a little off with Sein. He's very unsociable. Nothing Lou paints seems to satisfy Sein. After a small row Sein accidentally cuts Lou's hand and Sein's true nature is revealed. Sein is a vampire.

Lou comes to find himself somewhat attracted to Sein. He's resolved to paint a portrait that Sein will approve of. But a man named Adam comes into the picture. It seems that Sein and Adam have a contract. Sein gets to feed off Adam and Adam gets musical scores. Sein had fed off Lou the day before and wasn't as hungry when Adam had arrived. After Adam left in a huff Sein wanted a little more of Lou's blood. A little strange since he'd just vomited up a large amount of blood. We find out that Sein had fallen in love with Lou's grandfather, Claude, many years ago. It seems that Lou and Claude's blood taste similar. [more]

Wild Butterfly
Story and art by Hiroki Kusumoto
Published by Juné, imprint of Digital Manga, Inc.
ISBN-10:  1569705623
ISBN-13:  9781569705629

Review by Jilly Gee

If I were to give Wild Butterfly a quantitative score, it would be very low.  The stories are amazing, the art is beautiful and detailed, and there are even color pages.  It does not, however, fit the boys love genre.  Oh, there is one brief story that features a male on male couple, but that hardly changes the feel the graphic novel and justifies dumping it into the Juné line.  There are a couple of other stories with a slashy feeling, but if an affectionate and close relationship was enough to brand a story as BL, then half of the Shounen Jump series should move to BE X BOY.

"Wild Butterfly", namesake of the book and the first story, starts with a hint of the tragedy to come as the color pages show a tired-looking, dark-haired man with his students, silently contemplating the past.  Oliver, a young, dark-haired man who longs to join in the war his country is in the middle of, but unable to because of a bad leg, is assigned as a teaching assistant to Sir Michael von Straum Liedelhart.  Michael, despite being a military man who has led many men to victory, or perhaps because of it, only wants to see peace in the world and teaches the children so.  The two develop a close friendship, Oliver slowly changing the way he sees the world.
